Inverter generators are the newer generator type and with any new development there are a few upgrades to be expected. To choose whether an inverter generator is a true upgrade for your off-grid electricity needs then you need to consider each aspect for your own specific situation. There are two downsides associated with inverter generators; price and power. Plenty of people still wonder whether an inverter generator is the more suitable option even though inverter generators have many advantages compared to conventional portable generators. Here we are going to see two types of inverter generator which are Honda EU2200i and Ryobi 2300.
The Honda EU2200i is designed to be a user-friendly portable generator, it guides the user using a four step color-coded system to start the machine with the manual recoil. Other user-friendly features are the fuel shutoff, larger parts dedicated to oil control and a low noise level. At a quarter load the noise level is published at only 48 dBA and 57 dBA at rated load. The EU2200i model has 2200 watts surge power and 1800 watts running power which is 200 watts more than the previous model. The look of this model is also similar with the older generation design with the signature red and black housing, also a thick carrying handle that runs along its length at the top.
The EU2200i is parallel capable with any other EU2200i model but also the EB2200i and even the older EU2000i model. The design also includes an eco throttle system, which means that it is energy efficient with a maximum run time of 8.1 hours at a quarter load on a full fuel tank. The fuel tank of this generator is just under one gallon, considering the efficiency it has on such a small fuel tank it is expected that this inverter generator is affordable to run.

Honda EU2200i weighs only 46.5lbs, with a 120 volt AC output and a 12 volt DC output. To use the DC output you will need to purchase additional accessories so that the EU2200i can be hooked up. As mentioned before this generator has a small tank that can be filled with gasoline up to 0.95 gallons. Thanks to the 121 cc GXR120 engine this generator is lightweight and quiet but delivers decent power.
For this model Honda has worked on improving the manual recoil system, where starting the engine requires less arm strength owing to the automatic mechanical de-compressor. A damage preventing feature is the automatic circuit breaker which switches off the inverter generator when there is the danger of overloading or unstable electricity.
Ryobi is best known as a power equipment producer but less known for its generators, but the Ryobi 2300 is focused on portability and user-friendly design. This model weighs 56lbs which is not the lightest model available today but it has compact dimensions so you can store away 2 of them in the trunk of your car or RV for double the power using the parallel capabilities.
Ryobi 2300 also seems to be targeting the younger generation, you can see this in the wireless monitoring mobile application for this generator. There is a choice for 2 USB ports instead of a DC power outlet. This inverter holds 2300 watts starting power and 1800 watts continuous power. If you need more power then buying 2 at the same time can be considered.
The 1.2 gallon fuel tank has a run time of over 10 hours on a quarter load, 7 hours on a 50% load and over 4 hours when running at full capacity. There is a control panel at the front which has an LCD screen therefore it is easy to keep track of everything. The screen shows how many hours it has been running, the fuel level, current load and whether it is on idle. The noise level for this generator is 57 dBA.
On the Ryobi 2300 you can find two USB ports and two 120V 20 Amp AC power outlets, circuit breakers and an overload reset button. As mentioned before, there is the mobile application that can be used to keep an eye on things from a distance. This inverter generator can be switched off straight from your mobile phone.
Despite the tech savvy details this generator can only be turned on using the manual recoil system. However, it is an easy 3-step process with clear pictures explaining each step on the inverter’s side where you find the pull lever. There is also an interesting feature which is a cold start, this makes sure that the engine gets running even in cold temperatures.
Honda EU2200i vs Ryobi 2300
As has been discussed above we can see that Honda EU2200i and Ryobi 2300 offer different specs and features. The Honda EU2200i offers the traditional specs for an inverter generator, while Ryobi 2300 added a tech-focused design with an mobile application that connects your smartphone with the generator through bluetooth.
If we look more closely, the Honda EU2200i is lighter with only 46.5 lbs whereas the Ryobi 2300 that weighs 56 lbs. For the running watts and surge wattage they offer the same at 1800 watts and 2200 watts. The noise level on the Honda is quieter at 48dB while Ryobi at 56 dB. The tank size on Ryobi is bigger than the Honda but Honda wins for fuel efficiency since with only 0.95 gallons tank size it can run up to 8.1 Hours at 25% load.
As we know that inverter generator is identical with its function as a portable generator, so to fit in with the description the Honda wins. From its weight, fuel efficiency and power Honda offers the best specification. But for those who prefer a more up to date generator with its upgraded technology then Ryobi is the go to generator since it has an LCD screen that is easy to keep track of everything and of course the bluetooth feature that connects to your smartphone.
